Finding out about your ancestors
Finding out about your ancestors
Dunedin (Monday, 14 March 2016) – Do you want to find out if you are descended from some of Dunedin’s earliest settlers?
Toitū Otago Settlers Museum and the Otago Settlers Association are hosting a heritage and family history day at the Museum on Monday, 21 March.
Museum Public Programmes Developer Rua McCallum says, “The purpose of the day is two fold. People will be able to share information, family trees and Museum resources. There is also the chance they could meet members of their wider family.
“We are hoping this project will herald the beginning of an annual event where people will be able to identify their ancestors who arrived in Dunedin on the early ships.”
Association President Susan Schweigman says, “This project is a great opportunity to learn more about our earliest settlers and their descendants. We are excited to be involved at the pilot stage of this long term project.”
Ms McCallum says another benefit of holding the event will be the opportunity to update the Museum’s settlers’ database.
“This means we can communicate with even more descendants.”
Museum and Association representatives will be available in the Smith Gallery between 10am and 4pm on 21 March.
