Upcoming events at the City Library for Children's Day
No surprises in the woods today – the bears are chilling at the Library
Dunedin (Tuesday, 1 March) – Teddy bears everywhere are invited to Dunedin City Library this Sunday to celebrate Children’s Day with a special Storypit picnic.
Hosted by local author, educator and storyteller, Kaitrin McMullan, our furry friends and their young owners will be able to enjoy plenty of songs and stories while they munch on afternoon tea. Kaitrin’s blend of whacky rhymes, silly jokes and performance-based storytelling has entertained both the young and the young-at-heart for over 20 years.
“Stories are one of humankind’s ‘bear’ essentials!” says Ms McMullan. “We all tell stories, be it jokes, anecdotes, or family history – it is such a neat way of passing on values, wisdom and the odd giggle! And of course it paves the way to literacy.”
Sunday promises to be a chilled-out day at the Library as youngsters can also take part in free relaxation classes before the picnic. Danielle Culling of Relax Kids is offering sessions for three different age groups, from babies right up to 13-year-olds. She is confident children will emerge calmer and happier.
“The aim of this is to take children to a calm and happy place,” Ms Culling says. “We help them to manage their feelings, including increasing concentration and reducing anxiety.”
Bring your favourite bear, your brothers and sisters, and your listening ears down to our happy place at the City Library and prepare yourself for a fun-filled afternoon.
