Slicing, stitching and slowing time
New video work at the AAG.
The Gallery is bringing the work of celebrated New Zealand new media artist Daniel Crooks and the Chartwell Collection
to Ashburton for the first time. Static No.16 (fisher-yates shuffle) opens at the Gallery on Saturday the 5th of March
and runs through till the 3rd of April. This innovative video work appeals to all ages and will challenge your
perspective of everyday realities.
In Static No. 16 (fisher-yates shuffle) a populated urban setting is manipulated and time and motion are slowed down.
Crooks uses an innovative ‘time slice’ video technique by using slices of moving image to create a digital collage. This
work plays with the richness of the environment and the movement of people who cross paths.
Ashburton Art Gallery Curator Shirin Khosraviani says “we are excited not only to have this captivating work on show but
also to begin our working relationship with the outstanding Chartwell Collection and Auckland Art Gallery. Its hearting
that Ashburton can now accommodate works of this standard”.
Daniel Crooks was born in Hasting in 1973. His practice spans across a range of media including digital video,
photography and installation. He is a graduate of the Auckland Institute of Technology and the Victorian College of the
Arts School of Film and Television, Crooks received an Australia Council Fellowship in 1997 to research motion control
at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He has exhibited internationally in Australia, Europe, the United
Kingdom, the United States and Asia and has received numerous awards including the 2001 City of Stuttgart Prize for
Animation and an Australian Short Film Award at the 1996 Sydney International Film Festival.
This work is on loan from the Chartwell Collection, currently on long term loan at the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o
Tamaki. The Chartwell Collection is unique from other public and private collections in the country with a focus on
contemporary Australian and New Zealand art.
