Dunedin Woman Wins National Photography Competition

Dunedin Woman Wins National Photography Competition

The winning photograph

Dunedin woman Edith Leigh has beaten professional photographers to win a national photography competition.

Dilmah Tea and Canon organised the competition challenging entrants to illustrate the ways tea had inspired them with photography.

Sixteen finalists were chosen nationally and displayed in Napier during the Art Deco Festival. The winner was announced at a ceremony in Napier on February 19.

“It feels like a dream. I have to pinch myself to realise it is real,” she said.

Her photograph depicted her five year old daughter having a tea party with her favourite toys.

Ironically Mrs Leigh almost didn’t enter the competition.

"It just feels unbelievable, it's such an amazing prize. This is the first photography competition I've ever entered and to win it has been the most amazing feeling."

The prize is an all expenses paid 10-day trip to Sri Lanka along with $5000 of Canon photography equipment.

The judges were impressed with her entry saying “it perfectly brought together both the technical aspects that make a beautiful photo- such as lighting, colour and composition- along with the emotional aspects so many of us can relate to, from the imagination of childhood when playtime could be inspired by a tea party with our favourite teapot and our favourite toy animals.”

After getting over the shock of the win, Mrs Leigh is now planning the trip.

"I can't wait to travel to Sri Lanka, to drink tea, and take photos with all my new gear."
