An Electrifying Line-up of Comedians Will Deliver High-Voltage Laughs This Fest

Laughing Matters! So this year the 2016 NZ International Comedy Festival powered by Flick Electric Co. will bring you even more high-voltage hilarity from award-winning internationals, popular locals and returning Festival favourites. There’s a wonderful variety of comedy styles to make you laugh out loud. So whether you snort, cackle, chortle, or giggle, rally your mates together this autumn and have a great time watching live comedy at this year’s Comedy Fest.

The Flick Electric Co. Comedy Gala (Friday 22 April at ASB Theatre in Auckland) and Flick Electric Co. First Laughs (Sunday 24 April at the Opera House in Wellington) will launch the Comedy Fest with a high-powered line-up of what’s to come over the next three weeks. Both shows will be hosted by Rhys Darby bringing you an unforgettable night of fast-paced comedy. The end of the laughs will be celebrated with the awarding of the Billy T & The Fred Awards at Last Laughs (Sunday 15 May at SkyCity Theatre), hosted by Paul Ego.

What’s become known as the alternative Gala, Le Comique (Sunday 1 May at SkyCity Theatre) will showcase a wonderful range of comedy styles, hosted by our favourite French flaneur Marcel Lucont and accompanied by Red Bastard, George Egg, The Fan Brigade,with more to be announced.

Ben Hurley returns to host Auckland’s Next Big Things on 23 April at Q Theatre; and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer will introduce Wellington’s line-up of Next Big Things on 26 April at San Fran, giving you a taste of who’s hot right now in the local comedy scenes. Keep an eye out on the 2016 Billy T Award nominees performing their solo shows Alice Brine, David Correos,James Malcolm, Laura Daniel and Matt Stellingwerf.

The 2degrees Comedy Convoy pulls into town at seven locations across NZ from 18 – 28 May, with a global crew of five ready to get you grinning like a Cheshire cat. Hilarious French raconteur, Marcel Lucont hosts a top selection of the Comedy Festival’s favourite’s including much-loved American cowboy Wilson Dixon, super-dry Welshman Lloyd Langford, two-time Fred Award nominee Jamie Bowen, and Angela Barnes from the UK whom Sarah Millican rates as “Brilliantly funny”. This year we’re coming to Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, Tauranga, Taupo, Hamilton and Whangarei.

Laughing matters, and we’ve worked hard to programme a vast array of hilarious shows so there’s a show suited for everyone tastes. Stand-Up for Kids, offers laughs for the young (and young at heart!); high school students aspiring to be comedians get a chance to show what they are made of in our Class Comedians programme.

During the Comedy Fest we’ll also be offering a range of deaf friendly comedy shows on Thursdays, featuring a NZ Sign Language interpreter on stage during the show. Seecomedyfestival.co.nz for the specific shows and dates.
