Football Community Supports Idea of a Mixed-Use Outdoor Facility
Mainland Football is backing the call for a large mixed-use outdoor facility in Christchurch, following the release of a survey commissioned by the Canterbury rugby Union and BNZ crusaders, earlier this week.
91% of Christchurch residents polled believe Christchurch needs a modern, mixed-use outdoor events venue, and 84% of respondents identified football as the type of event that people most want to see.
“The research certainly points to the backing by the people of Canterbury for a mixed use outdoor facility. As our sport continues to grow and we look to increase the supporter base of sides like the Mainland Pride and The Canterbury Dragons, along with bringing football events to the city we would be looking for venues of this type”, says Julian Bowden, Mainland football CEO.
Mr Bowden adds that it is not only sporting codes which will benefit from such a facility, but “having concerts, festivals and other events back in the city, will provide tourism and broadcast opportunities but as importantly, it will help lift the spirits of Cantabrians, as we continue to recover from the significant events of the past 5 years.”
Now that the people of Canterbury have given a clear indication of the public appetite for a mixed use outdoor facility, Mainland Football will look to work with the many other interested parties to bring this project to fruition.
