Save the Date! Supported Decision Making – a National Conversation Hui 20 & 21 April 2016

Auckland Disability Law in partnership with the Office of Disability Issues and the Ministry of Social Development’s Think Differently Fund is hosting a National Conversation hui about supported decision making (SDM) in April. SDM makes sure disabled people can make choices about their own lives. Effective SDM helps to ensure disabled people have the same rights as everybody else.

We invite you to be part of this important event and to save these dates.

Who is the Conversation hui for:

• Disabled people, people living with dementia and their supporters, and family/whanau
• DPOs, disability service providers, community organisations and their staff
• Legal and health professionals
• Anyone who has an interest in SDM.

The Conversation hui will discuss:
• What SDM is and why it is important
• SDM as a human right and Article 12 of United Nations Convention on the

Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)
• What is happening in New Zealand about SDM
• Legal processes around SDM
• People’s right to make their own decisions, and what it takes to make SDM work for people
• Practical publications and resources available to help SDM.

Things you need to know now:
• The Conversation will be held in Auckland 20 & 21 April 2016
• It is being held at Waipuna Hotel, Mt Wellington, Auckland
• Registration will be open by 4 March 2016 (We will contact you again when registration is open).
