Sparks Romantic Music Sets Valentine Hearts Aflame

Sparks Romantic Music Sets Valentine Hearts Aflame

A night of unashamed romance awaits Sparks concert-goers this year, as the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra plucks the heart-strings with over 80 minutes of classic love themes.

The free North Hagley Park concert on Saturday 13 February celebrates the eve of Valentine's Day with favourites like the passionate 'Stormy Weather' to the tragic 'Love theme from Romeo and Juliet' and swinging tunes like 'Mambo' from West Side Story.

Preshow entertainment starts at 6pm with a not-to-be-missed line-up featuring Lizzie Cook, Cathy Irons, TWO Productions and the River City Jazzmen.

The main programme opens at 7.30pm with Kenneth Young conducting the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, and soloists including Amanda Atlas and Jennine Bailey. After interval the audience can dance along to an extended version of Strauss's popular 'Blue Danube'.

The fireworks display will light up the sky to the rousing 'Marche Slav' from Tchaikovsky, before the evening of toe-tapping and dreamy romance ends at 10pm.

Donations will be collected at the event for the St John Ambulance Service.

If the weather is wet, Sparks will be on Sunday 14 February, Valentine's Day. Check www.summertimes.co.nz for a decision.
