New North Shore campus for Hungry Creek Art & Craft School

A new owner and new location marks an exciting chapter for well-respected and innovative art institute – Hungry Creek Art & Craft School.

First established near Puhoi in 1990, Hungry Creek Art & Craft School is recognised for delivering quality NZQA accredited art, craft and jewellery qualifications. The move to Hillside Road in Auckland’s Wairau Valley will see this continue under the leadership of Shane Hartdegen, the school’s new owner.

Trained as a goldsmith and qualified in jewellery design, Hartdegen has worked at Hungry Creek for 15 years as the Head of Jewellery and was appointed Head of School last year.

“We’re looking forward to building on the school’s history and are currently enrolling for the first year of study,” says Hartdegen. “Our accomplished staff are all practising artists in their respective fields and our team is excited to embark on a new chapter in our continuing development as a tertiary education provider.”

He adds: “Well made and considered work remains a key focus of our programmes and teaching. There’s a strong emphasis on technical skills which are taught in the fully equipped jewellery, sculpture, painting and ceramics studios.”

The move means Hungry Creek Art & Craft School is the only art school on the North Shore delivering NZQA accredited courses. Areas of study available include painting, jewellery, ceramics, sculpture, drawing, design, art history and computer aided design for jewellery. In addition, there are casual, weekend, part-time and evening classes.

“From this year our students who have completed the Diploma in Jewellery Design or Art & Craft are able to enrol for a Bachelor in Visual Arts via Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic. We also offer postgraduate studies to students from other institutions who have a similar level of study in visual arts.”

Hungry Creek students are becoming increasingly well regarded in the industry with a number being selected forTalente, an exhibition of handmade craft in Munich, as well as being part of Handshake 2, an international jewellery mentoring project.

“Students come to Hungry Creek to become artists, craftspeople, designers and teachers or to gain employment with associated industries,” says Hartdegen.
