Quebec’s L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres (LODHO) will perform at Auckland’s Q Theatre on Debs McSmith says, eliver justternational talent to New Zealand ical and from March 22 – 24, 2016.
Following extensive international touring success L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres (meaning ‘the one-man-band band’) will arrive in Auckland fresh from performances at the New Zealand Festival.
Using the colourful repertoire of American music icon Tom Waits as their playground, LODHO pay tribute to such songs as ‘I Don’t Wanna Grow Up’, ‘Chocolate Jesus’, ‘Big Black Mariah’, ‘Dirt in the Ground’, ‘Rains on Me’, ‘Underground’, ‘I’ll Shoot the Moon’ and ‘All the World Is Green’. This four-man band of one-man bands plunges audiences head-first into an entertainment spectacle that is more carnival show and musical circus than plain old concert.
Armed with nearly 100 objects and invented instruments on stage, LODHO create madcap scenes to reconstruct the world of Tom Waits. Mixing styles and adapting arrangements, these multi-instrumentalists perform with banjos, turkey basters, dominoes, spoons, tea cups, a pistol, bells, balloons, bottles and many more.
“Q is all about eclectic and extraordinary experiences. L’orchestre are the kind of artists that can deliver exactly that. We are so pleased that we’re able to bring this kind of international talent to Auckland audiences,” says Q Theatre’s Debs McSmith.
Founded in 2002, LODHO was named the best local phenomenon for all genres by Voir magazine (Quebec City) in December 2009, and nominated for the Prix d’excellence des arts et de la culture de la Ville de Québec in 2010, LODHO made its mark in 2005 with Performs Tom Waits. This production, which has continued to run ever since, lies at the heart of the group’s unique and iconoclastic artistic approach. Performs Tom Waits has been presented over 150 times in Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, France, Mexico, Ecuador, Luxembourg, Finland, Ireland, Germany, Canada and now New Zealand.
L’orchestre d’hommes-orchestres is a collective led by Bruno Bouchard, Gabrielle Bouthillier, Jasmin Cloutier, Simon Drouin, Simon Elmaleh and Danya Ortmann.
This is a Q Theatre and 95bFM presentation made possible with the support of Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the New Zealand Festival.
