Get your lion’s share of love at Wellington Zoo this Valentine’s Day
This Valentine’s Day, Wellington Zoo will open its doors after hours for an adults-only evening event. Visitors are invited to take a stroll around the Zoo and head along to special themed talks about the romantic exploits of some of their favourite animals.
“We’re offering an after-hours, adults-only Valentine’s Night experience,” said Amy Hughes, General Manager Community Engagement. “The Zoo will be open until 8.30pm, with live music, Animal Close Encounters, and special animal talks.”
Giving couples a chance to enjoy their wild side, the annual event has been growing in popularity. This year, guests can also book an all-in-one Valentine's Day Package in advance, which includes a delicious hamper and Zoo entry for two. A limited number of Animal Close Encounters will also be available for those who want to treat their loved one to a truly wild night out.
“Our visitors love the special talks – which are a little more risqué for our adult audience,” says Amy. “Valentine’s Night is the only time of the year when the Zoo is for adults only – it’s a chance for the grown-ups to enjoy a picnic and a glass of wine, and learn more about what goes on when the lights go off in the animal kingdom.”
“While the event is mostly about fun, it also gives us the opportunity to share stories about the conservation breeding programmes at the Zoo, especially for endangered species like Red Pandas,” says Amy. “And, our Close Encounters give people the opportunity to get even closer to our amazing animals, while supporting our conservation fund to save animals in the wild.”
Local band The Ratbags will perform in Wellington Zoo’s newest area, Meet the Locals He Tuku Aroha. Regular Zoo entry prices apply for the evening event, and the Zoo will stay open from 5pm through to 8.30pm.
For one special couple, Wellington Zoo will also help arrange a bespoke wedding proposal, available to bid through online auction site Trademe – closing Wednesday 27 January. The proposal includes coordination of the proposal at the Zoo, photos of the event, a behind-the-scenes tour, a gourmet food and wine hamper and Zoo entry, a bouquet of flowers and one night’s accommodation at Amora Hotel Wellington.
