Harry Feasts on Young Rider In Chirstchurch
Harry Feast nabbed his second young rider win in as many weeks at Showjumping Canterbury’s South Island Championships
Xmas Cracker Show yesterday held at the NEC McLeans Island, near Christchurch.
Despite being reduced to just the six starters visiting course designer Gerrit Beker, of Tauranga, didn’t let up,
building an imposing track. Aboard the seven-year-old, Double J Bouncer, Feast jumped clear in the first round along
with the in-form Kimberley Bird (Ashburton) on Ngahiwi Summer, Tamara Silcock (Nelson) on CoDicea and Leeston’s Rose
Alfeld on Capprera.
Out first in the jump-off, Bird had a rail. Feast was next jumping clear in a speedy 37.59 seconds to move into the
lead. Silcock produced another lovely clear round to hold second, with Alfeld having to settle for fourth after having
two fences down.
Feast was thrilled with his horse’s efforts, capping off a good show with his young team picking up placings in all
three age-group series classes. His Young Rider win aboard Double J Bouncer backed up from success at South Canterbury
North Otago’s FEI World Jumping Challenge Show last weekend and continues his strong run of form this season.
It has also filled him with confidence ahead of a North Island campaign which includes being a member of the South
Island Young Rider team named to compete against his North Island counterparts next weekend as part of the Young Horse
Show in Hastings.
Springston teen Steffi Whittaker’s season continued to shine taking out both the hotly-contested Country TV/Saddlery
Barn Pony Grand Prix with the only clear in a six-strong jump-off and the South Island Speed Pony Championship. The
Birchbrook Equestrian South Island Speed Horse Championship meanwhile went to a deserving Nicole White (Invercargill)
and her speed demon Cricklewood Ace for a record fourth year on the trot.
A late decision to enter the Tavern Harewood Horse Mini Prix proved fruitful for Queenstown-based Zoe Shore aboard Zara,
scoring their first Mini Prix victory after managing to hold out a late charge from Louise Marriott on Concur, Tegan
Fitzsimon on Alacazam MH and White on Cricklewood Ace in the jump-off.
Amanda Roy, of Clinton, took out the Let’s Bale Pro Am on Rumours NZPH, while the Amateur went to Candace Kingsbury
(Ashburton) on Miss Serendipity II after a tight tussle against the clock and West Melton’s Rohan Tennekoon picked up
his first Junior win of the season aboard new ride Double J Rumours in the Telford/Mainland Coach Work Junior Series
class.
The age group classes for five, six and seven-year olds were won by Georgina Power (Little River) on Flirtini, Cherie Cournane (Invercargill) on MF Candy and Tegan Fitzsimon (West Melton)
on Double J Monarch, respectively.
In all, the event attracted more than 280 riders and 490 horses from across the South Island competing over two days of
intense competition.
