Taupo Combo Take Grand Prix at Wellington Horowhenua Champs
Helen McNaught-McFarlane and Carnutelabryere pulled off a handy double today at the Versatile Home and Buildings Wellington Horowhenua Showjumping Championships.
The two took to heart the gallop into the last fence in the jump-off of the Equissage Horse Grand Prix and it could have gone either way . . . lucky for this Taupo combination, they pulled it off and won.
Fifteen started the class over the Heather McDonald (Dannevirke) designed course, with just four coming through to the jump-off.
First out was accomplished teen Emily Fraser (Feilding) and Kiwi Sunray who stopped the clock at 42.94 seconds but bagged four faults en route. Robert Steele (Dannevirke) and Grand Coeur 36 also picked up four but in a slower time of 46.28. McNaught-McFarlane was clear in 43.09, with Oliver Edgecombe (Waipukurau) and Ultra Blue NZPH clear in 45.85.
“We took off a bit early into the last,” says McNaught-McFarlane. “It was a gallop into the fence – I was committed and he (Carnutelabryere) was away with the birdies. He does that often but once he took off he realised he was going to have to work a bit harder and he did.”
The nine-year-old grey has come along in leaps and bounds since he arrived in New Zealand a year or so ago.
“It really does suit him here,” says McNaught-McFarlane.
The horse has been very consistent this season, with wins in grand prix classes in Foxton in October, at Equidays, Masterton and today. He has also placed twice in World Cup classes.
“This year we are choosing a bit more about where we start. He is jumping better than ever though and doing things he just couldn’t do last year.”
Shanae McKay (Levin) and the lovely Guthrie won the Country TV Pony Grand Prix while South Island raider Olivia Robertson (Christchurch) did herself all sorts of favours in the Canterbury Equestrian Young Rider Series with another win.
