Angling opportunities aplenty – Fish & Game

With the waterways open, the weather forecast good, and new licence categories available, there is no better time to get out fishing than this long weekend – Canterbury Anniversary Weekend.

Fish & Game’s Communications Advisor Andrew Currie says anglers are assured of fantastic angling this weekend.

“Whether you are a novice, fishing for sea-run brown trout on the lower reaches of the coastal rivers, or an experienced fly fisherman targeting the pristine waters of the Canterbury back country, this weekend should be a cracker.”

The North Canterbury High Country fishery opened last weekend, which now sees over 95% of the regions fresh water fishery open to stakeholders.

“Feedback from the High Country opening suggests a good number of good condition trout and salmon were taken from Lake Coleridge and the surrounding smaller lakes, such as Selfe and Georgina.”

Mr Currie believes the organisation has listened to feedback and the introduction of four new licence categories will provide more flexibility for anglers, especially during the holiday periods.

This weekend is perfect for those fishermen and women wanting to take advantage of the new 3 day - short break - licence category.

“For $45, an angler can capitalise on the regions outstanding fresh water fishery and Fish & Game has also reduced the price of the 1 day licence, to just $20.”

The bumper whitebait season on the coastal waters will also attract many this weekend, as those staying close to the city head out in the pursuit of a fat, sea-run brown trout, for the smoker or barbeque.

Anglers are reminded that those traveling further afield - to waterways such as the West Coast’s popular Lake Brunner – should make sure they are fishing with the correct licence category.

Mr Currie adds “a West Coast ranger is going to be none too pleased if they come across a Canterbury angler, fishing Lake Brunner on a Local Area licence, purchased for the North Canterbury region.”

If you are in doubt about the most suitable licence, Fish & Game advise taking the safest option, purchase a whole season licence.

“How can you beat 34 cents a day, to fish virtually all the fresh water in the country for an entire year?”
