GORMACK’S TROPHY HAUL CONTINUES

Amberley’s Giles Gormack has added the Ataahua Brigader Trophy to his trophy haul this season, winning the CIC3* on debut at the FEI South Island One Day Eventing Championships in Christchurch today.

Backing up from his South Island Three Eventing CCI2* title in May, Gormack stepped up to CIC3* beating home a small field aboard the 11-year-old Littorio gelding, Lucero.

Reduced to just the two starters today after Emily Cammock (West Melton) was forced to withdrawn overnight leader Shaw Lee, Lucero ate up the big John Carmichael-designed track coming home clear with just 16.8 time penalties to finish on a total score of 104.5 penalties. Cammock finished second on r other ride, Lewis, with 119.5.

Gormack was absolutely thrilled with the result after a less than perfect preparation. “He was very fresh in the dressage but redeemed himself today.”

As expected, the Storer Motors Ltd CIC2* was a much tighter affair, with less than 10 penalties separating the entire class heading into today’s cross country following the withdrawal of Courtney Davis and Dunrobin Sante Fe at the end of the dressage and showjumping phases.

The day belonged to 16-year-old St Margaret’s College student Maria van Kuijk on the 16-year-old, Antara Whiskey Mac, who put in a huge effort across country to finish with the fastest time of the day, adding just 2.4 penalties to her dressage score to sit on 63.3. Remarkably after three phases, Kirsty Sharapoff on Shoot The Breeze also finished the day on 63.3, but the honours deservedly went to van Kuijk with the closest to the optimum time with Sharapoff having to settle for second. Sophie Abbott (Christchurch) on Time To Tango Too were third on 68.6.

The 13-strong Hei Hei Pharmacy CIC1* went to Larissa Srhoy (Loburn) on Rockquest adding nothing to their impressive 44.8 overnight score from Cammock on Ngahiwi Frostie on 47.6, both well clear of third-placed Brodie Roberts (Kaiapoi) on SR Livingstone on 56.4.

Huge entries contested the lower level classes. Sophie Griffith (Kaiapoi) led from the front on Chocolat Moka to win the Canterbury Equine Clinic CNC105 convincingly on 30 penalties, while the Rangiora Vet Centre CNC95 was won by Zoe Haylock (Greenpark) on Artwork also finishing on their dressage score. And in the ESNZ Eventing Canterbury CNC80 Ashburton’s Nicola Sim kept her unbeaten record intact this spring on Chocolate Ice on an impressive 30.6 penalties.
