Rule, Britannia! APO Celebrates Best of British at Proms
Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) invites Aucklanders to don their finest bowler hats, Union Jack waistcoats, monocles or other suitably British attire in the spirit of The Last Night of the Proms, an evening of music where orchestral conventions – and decorum – are abandoned, and where audience participation is not only allowed, it’s expected.
The concert on Thursday 12 November at Auckland Town Hall is proudly presented by Jaguar and is a fun-filled celebration of all things British. This year, the APO is encouraging concertgoers to join in the festive atmosphere by coming dressed in the ‘Best of British’, whether it’s a great British icon or even simply resplendent in red, white and blue. Concertgoers can have their photo taken by our red carpet photographer to enter into the draw to win one of two fantastic prizes awarded to the best-dressed individuals. The grand prize is a luxury weekend for two in the beautiful Bay of Islands driving an effortlessly British Jaguar car.
The Last Night of the Proms celebrates all the pomp, flag-waving and fanfare of this great British orchestral tradition made famous at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and features traditional sing-alongs including ‘Jerusalem’ and Elgar’s ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. Alongside conductor Hamish McKeich, the APO has invited Australian soprano Penelope Mills to perform a selection of Proms favourites and to help rouse the audience into song. To add to the Proms festivities, the Auckland Town Hall will be lit in red, white and blue in the lead up to the concert.
