Consultation now open on place name proposals
Public consultation
has now opened on eight proposals to assign or alter names
of geographic features around the
country.
Assign
• Lake Ferry – to
the Wairarapa village known as ‘Lake Ferry’ (the
adjacent ‘Lake Onoke’ is not proposed to be
changed);
Alter existing recorded
names
• Kānuka Hills – alteration from
‘Nigger Hill’ in North Canterbury;
• Maunga
Kākaramea – alteration from ‘Maungakakaramea’ and
‘Rainbow Mountain’ near Rotorua;
• Steelhead Stream
– alteration from ‘Nigger Stream’ in North
Canterbury;
• Tawhai Hill – alteration from
‘Niggerhead’ in North Canterbury;
• Tokomairaro
River – spelling correction from ‘Tokomairiro River’
in South Otago;
• Tokomairaro River East Branch –
spelling correction from ‘Tokomairiro River East Branch’
in South Otago; and
• Tokomairaro River West Branch –
spelling correction from ‘Tokomairiro River West Branch’
in South Otago.
Consultation on these names will run from today, 29 October 2015, until either 4 December 2015 or 29 January 2016. Details about each proposal is publicly available from the LINZ website.
Anyone can make a submission during the consultation period either in support of, or objecting to, these proposals.
Submissions can be made in writing to the Secretary for the New Zealand Geographic Board, via the LINZ website, or tonzgbsubmissions@linz.govt.nz, or via post to: Level 7, Radio New Zealand House, 155 The Terrace, PO Box 5501, Wellington 6145.
Other decisions
In
addition to the eight proposals being consulted on, final
decisions on 217 geographic New Zealand and Antarctica names
became official and four were discontinued on 29
October.
