'Panguru and the City' shortlisted for W.H. Oliver Prize
Panguru and the City shortlisted for W.H. Oliver Prize
Melissa Matutina Williams’s Panguru and the City: Kāinga Tahi, Kāinga Rua has been shortlisted for the inaugural W. H. Oliver prize. This follows the book’s placing in the shortlist for the 2015 Ngā Kupu Ora Māori Book Awards, earlier this year.
Publisher Bridget Williams is delighted that Dr Williams’s book is being recognised. ‘Melissa writes with clarity and insight about the Panguru/Auckland communities, to which she belongs. And her work is contributing to a set of new interpretations of Māori history that BWB is proud to be publishing.’
The judges, Graeme Dunstall and Prof Giselle Byrnes, describe the book as ‘a groundbreaking and watershed text’. They note that Melissa Williams ‘offers us both a window into a crucial period of Māori historical experience and a new analysis of twentieth century New Zealand social and cultural history’.
Awarded by the New Zealand Historical Association, the W. H. Oliver prize recognises the best book on any aspect of New Zealand history published between April 2013 and March 2015. The winner of the W. H. Oliver prize will be announced at the New Zealand Historical Association’s AGM on 3 December at the University of Canterbury.
