With the support of the New Zealand France Friendship Fund, Paris-based curator Barbara Sirieix will make her first visit to New Zealand this October to undertake a one-month research residency and to curate an exhibition for contemporary art space The Physics Room in Christchurch.

The blue-grey wall

The Physics Room exhibition 'the blue-grey wall' (21 October - 28 November 2015) will feature five projects created by a selection of international artists – Madison Bycroft, Pauline Curnier Jardin, Eglė Kulbokaitė & Dorota Gawęda, Chloé Maillet & Louise Hervé (the duo will be artists in Residence at Te Whare Hera Wellington in 2016), Zoë Paul. The projects relate to the ocean as 'the blue-grey wall at the end of the world', an idea from a short novel by Ursula Le Guin. Responding to the idea of the ocean as a place of possibility, artists in this exhibition imagine submarine mythologies, deep sea cable networks and cyborg feminism.

Barbara Sirieix

From 2008 to 2012, Barbara Sirieix was co-director of Redshoes, a Paris-based organisation dedicated to artists’ films. Her recent projects (I’ve lost my marbles, Tòtal Project Space, Athens; La référence d’objet n’est pas définie à une instance d’objet, Galerie Edouard Manet, Gennevilliers) involve fictional writing. Barbara was in residency this summer to write a fiction about an exhibition project which will be published in a book by La Galerie, contemporary art center in Noisy-le-Sec and she also contributes to art-agenda and various publications.

New Zealand France Friendship Fund

The New Zealand France Friendship Fund was established in 1991 by an agreement between the French and New Zealand governments with the aim of promoting friendly relations between the citizens of the two countries. It seeks to enhance and deepen the historical, constructive and vibrant relationship between France and New Zealand. Projects can be of many types, such as cultural, artistic, sporting, historical, educational and entertainment endeavours.

The Physics Room

The Physics Room is a contemporary art space dedicated to developing and promoting contemporary art and critical discourse in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based in central Christchurch since 1996, The Physics Room assists art practitioners with resources and opportunities to achieve a higher level of professional and creative development, and encourage a greater acknowledgement, understanding and value of contemporary art among New Zealanders.
