Te Kāhui Maunga Kura Toi
The live performance of a ngeri, or short haka, will echo through the halls of the Hastings City Art Gallery on October 31.
As part of the Te Kāhui Maunga Kura Toi exhibition that celebrates 30 years of contemporary Maori art from Te Wananga o Aotearoa, two free public events have been put together.
The first, this Thursday (October 15), is a panel discussion between Te Wananga o Aotearoa staff, graduates, students and art educationalists, led by Tauranga-based Maori art commentator Julie Paama-Penegelly.
Te Awamutu based master carver Kereti Rautangata, master weaver Kahutoi Te Kanawa and art collector Margaret Aull will join local artists Sandy Adsett, Chris Bryant-Toi and Melysa Tapiata.
“When you consider how far Melysa Tapiata has come since attending Hukarere Girls College to complete her secondary school art requirements,” says Chris Bryant-Toi,
“She is now poised to embark on a mastorate study [prior] to entering the creative industries sector having nearly completed her degree at Toimairangi. Melysa and many others like her have many informed choices to make as they follow their passion for art.”
Just over a fortnight later Dr. Timoti Karetu and performers will present a ngeri composition that acknowledges the tribal ancestry, land and waterways of Ngati Kahungunu.
The ngeri was originally composed by Dr Karetu to be performed at the 2014 Koroneihana that marked the coronation of Kingi Tuheitia at Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia.
Local group, Ngati Kahungunu ki Heretaunga, later performed this ngeri at the
Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival 2015 held in Christchurch.
Ngati Kahungunu iwi will be hosting the next Matatini in Hastings during 2017, with planned art and culture events held at the Hastings City Art Gallery to coincide with the festival.
