Make ‘em laugh, dance, sing, create…

Wellington City Council is fostering the growth of comedy in New Zealand. It’s Creative Communities Scheme has agreed to fund the New Zealand Comedy and Humorous Arts Trusts – both champions of laughter.

The NZ Comedy Trust is putting its $6,000 to good use, continuing to grow a platform for New Zealand’s young comedians. Class Comedians 2016 will provide high school comedy workshops, mentoring and a final performance.

The Humorous Arts Trust will receive $2,000 towards the Wellington Raw Comedy Quest 2016 developing those emerging comedians taking the next step.

A total of $65,132 was allocated to arts projects in Wellington through this round of the Creative Communities Funding Scheme, a partnership between local councils and Creative New Zealand.

Nicola Young, City Councillor and chair of the Wellington Creative Communities panel says, “We considered some really innovative and exciting ideas, but we can't afford to fund everything, so after careful deliberation and some lively discussions we selected 25 of the best. Now we look forward to seeing the results, knowing some may shape our culture's future, as these projects are where our innovators begin.”

Other projects include: The Aro Valley Community Preschool children will be creating a mosaic alongside artist Rachel Silver, working to develop the mural design which will reflect the story of ‘our place’.

A site specific walking podcast focusing on the city’s literary scene, brought to you by Binge Culture Collective, will be available to listeners during Litcrawl on Saturday 14 November, and online after the event.
