Art exhibition opens
A number of west Auckland ‘Freedom sleepers’ will show off their artistic talents tomorrow when the Outward Light Art Exhibition opens at the Corban’s Estate in Henderson.
Outward Light – An Art Exhibition of works by a group of selected homeless and marginalised artists – has been supported by Waipareira and the Corban’s Estate.
Waipareira kaimahi Grant Wilson says the energy and expression put into every piece of art by the group has been enlightening.
“We have some very talented people and watching them show off their artistic talents has been an awesome experience to be part of,” Grant said.
“We have also been very fortunate to have the support of Waipareira and Corban’s Estate.”
The exhibition opens at 3.30pm Friday with a powhiri and viewing of the exhibits starts at 4pm.
A silent auction will be held throughout the two days that the exhibition will run, and the successful bidders will be announced on Saturday evening.
All proceeds from the auction will go directly to the artists.
Waipareira CEO John Tamihere said part of supporting this process was to help raise awareness of whanau facing tough times.
“We know the public has a perception of the homeless,” John said.
“Hopefully after seeing what these freedom sleepers can do artistically, people will have a more empathetic view of this group. Every person, no matter your colour or creed is entitled to have and retain their mana.”
