Celebrate art and science this weekend

Celebrate creativity in central Christchurch with a number of free, pop-up art and science activities this weekend.

There will be activities in the city this Saturday and Sunday for all ages and abilities in what are known Fun Palaces, an international festival celebrating art, science and community.

Fun Palaces Co-Director and London-based New Zealand author Stella Duffy says she is delighted that Christchurch is taking part.

"We are thrilled to have such a strong Fun Palaces presence in Aotearoa/New Zealand, thanks to the Christchurch community's engagement, involvement and passion," she says.

"We have 135 Fun Palaces on the map, stretching from New Zealand to North America and back to Great Britain. We love that the sun will rise on Christchurch and the first Fun Palaces this year - kicking off an international weekend of impact for everyday artists, citizen scientists and creative communities."

Christchurch City Council Events Production Team Manager Chloe Dear says the weekend is designed for and with the community.

"Fun Palaces are about creating and making together, they are a space where art, science, fun and learning meet right in the heart of Christchurch," she says.

"There is so much to see and do in central Christchurch during the weekend. Get together with your family, friends and community to enjoy one, or many, of the activities on offer."

• The big draw - a variety of enjoyable, drawing activities for those who love to draw, as well as for those who think they can't.

• Oculus Rift - experience Minecraft as if you were really there using the Oculus Rift.

• Lego mosaic making - become an artist with Lego as you create pixelated masterpieces.

• Cyanotype prints - create an artwork using light sensitive paper and sunlight to expose an image using plant forms.

• Opera sing-a-long - enjoy a taste of opera with this drop-in workshop.

• Cardboard city creation - bring along your ideas of what a city should look like and help build a cardboard city.

Beat the traffic and think about coming into town by bicycle or public transport. Gloucester St outside the Isaac Theatre Royal will be closed all day on Saturday 3 October 2015.
