Newspaper Reading Club Christchurch Poster Project
The Newspaper Reading Club (NPRC) is a public art project by artists Fiona Connor (NZ) and Michala Paludan (Denmark).
The artists are in residence at The Physics Room (8 September - 8 October) to develop the Christchurch Poster Project that will infiltrate the city with posters discussing local news and current affairs pasted up around Christchurch from Friday 2 October.
For this project, Connor and Paludan asked people to read aloud from newspapers and periodicals of their choice, making obvious in their commentary the process of skimming, personalisation and editing that naturally occurs when reading the news. An audio recording was taken as each participant read through articles from various publications including The Press, NZ Listener and Te Pānui Rūnaka. These recordings were transcribed, turned into posters, and will be displayed back at the location where the reading event took place.
NPRC have worked with 10 Christchurch locals on this poster project, participants from a range of backgrounds. The posters will be visible in 10 sites across Christchurch from Friday 2 October. They publically present a series of personal documents discussing wider community and political issues – artworks that also reflect upon the structures by which information is circulated and absorbed.
Formed in 2011, the Newspaper Reading Club is an ongoing project that takes many forms including: performances, radio broadcasts, publications and posters. A key focus of NPRC is to look at how people get their news and how they engage with the broader narratives of current affairs. Newspaper Reading Club have made projects in New York in 2014, and Auckland in 2012.
