Many of the stars of New Zealand Netball will come out to play at ASB Sports Centre in Wellington, when the Netball NZ National Champs get underway on Monday 28 September.
Netball fans will be in for a real treat when current and former Silver Ferns squad members, plus a host of ANZ Championship stars, take to the court at the five day event.
Headlining the big names will be NNZ ambassador and Silver Ferns icon, Irene van Dyk who will suit up for Wellington. She will join forces with a number of players with ANZ Championship experience, including current Silver Ferns squad member, Ameliaranne Wells, as well as Whitney Souness, Elias Shadrock and Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit.
Fresh off a break after Netball World Cup 2015 (NWC2015) is Grace Rasmussen who will take the court for Netball Waitakere. This team will have high hopes particularly with sharpshooter Cathrine Latu anchoring their shooting circle.
Defending champions, Christchurch, will be keen to make it back-to-back titles. Led by Mainland Tactix captain Anna Thompson, this team has NWC2015 Samoa representative Julianna Naoupu in the shooting circle, alongside a number of current Tactix squad members including Charlotte Elley, Hayley Saunders and Louise Thayer.
Keen to go one better in 2015 will be North Harbour. Former Silver Ferns coach Yvonne Willering is at the helm of this team that includes two members of the Silver Ferns NWC2015 campaign; Phoenix Karaka and Malia Paseka. The team boasts talent at both ends of the court with Karaka and Paseka to potentially pair up with Temalisi Fakahokotau and new Mystics recruit Megan Craig, respectively.
Hamilton will be another team to watch with the coaching duo of Marg Forsyth and Amigene Metcalfe looking to build on their third place finish in 2014. While Auckland will be keen to push into the top five, with captain Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick leading the way in defence.
With 17 teams vying for the title, and so much talent on display, this is one event Netball fans won’t want to miss!
