Douglass girls dominate amateur at Otago

South Canterbury sister-act Rosa and Anna Douglass put in a smart performance, finishing one-two in the opening round of the South Island Caledonian Holdings Amateur series at the Otago Area ESNZ Spring Jumping Show in Mosgiel yesterday.

Reduced to just the five starters, the pair overcome cold and wet conditions over the Erin Duffy-designed track. Third to go, Rosa posted the class’s first and only clear round to win on Ransom Note, with Anna’s unlucky rail at the fourth fence forcing her to settle for second with the Fisher family’s St Henry.

Former Young Rider of the Year Rose Alfeld (Leeston) got the season underway with a flyer taking out the hotly contested Canterbury Equestrian Young Rider aboard Capprera with the Telford Junior Rider to Jaimee Bird (Rakaia) on Wenrose Vertigo with the only clear round.

Today, Invercargill’s Nicole White and Cricklewood Ace again showed their dominance taking out the South Canterbury Saddlery Horse Mini Prix with a double clear in a speedy time of 52.39 seconds, ahead of Rik Van Miltenburg on Truly Unique. She was also third with Flashback. The win came on the back of a win in the Main Events Universities series class on Saturday.

The Team Cubbitt Pony Mini Prix was won by Canterbury visitor Steffi Whittaker (Lincoln) on Moonlight Glow. There were three clears in the first round, but Whittaker was the only combination to notch up a double clear. Local Jayne Beattie finished second on Just Lucky as the fastest of the 4 faulters.
