Sissons off the 'very hot' pace in Chicago

Sissons off the 'very hot' pace in Chicago

Ryan Sissons gave his all but was ultimately off the pace in the ITU World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Chicago today, finishing in 34th place to end a frustrating season ranked 33rd in the world.

Sissons emerged from the water just over 30 seconds down on the leaders and settled into the chase pack on the bike, and with the gap at times close to one minute to the lead group containing the likes of Javier Gomez, Mario Mola and Jonathan Brownlee, there was a danger they would stay away.

But a second half push on the bike saw the chase group surge and become one large group of over 50 athletes as they headed into T2.

Sissons did not however have the run he wanted as he looked to back up his strong 6th place finish in the previous WTS race in Stockholm, posting a 31:46 10k split.

The race itself was won by Mario Mola, who in the process posted the fastest ever 10k split in a WTS event, clocking 28:59 as he and countryman Gomez made it a Spanish one-two, with Gomez in the process doing enough to seal a record breaking fifth ITU World Triathlon Championship title.
