Sarah Louisa Mathew, A Woman of True Grit
Sarah Louisa Mathew is known as the wife of surveyor Felton Mathew, who drew up the town plan for Auckland in the early 1840s. In fact, she made her own contribution to the new colony of New Zealand and was a woman of true grit.
She accompanied her husband on many expeditions in New South Wales and New Zealand, acted as his secretary and organiser, while cheerfully enduring primitive conditions on ship or in a tent. She wrote about life in the fledgling capital of Auckland with insight and literary flair.
Tessa Duder’s latest book Sarah Mathew: Explorer, Journalist and Auckland's 'First Lady' explores the untold story of Sarah’s adventurous life. She will be in conversation with Iain Sharp, manuscripts librarian at the Sir George Grey Special Collections at Auckland Library at the Michael King Writers’ Centre on Sunday September 27.
Tessa Duder needs no introduction. A former champion swimmer and now one of New Zealand’s leading writers, she has written many books for children, teenagers and adults, including the famous Alex series, which has been turned into film. She has won numerous awards for her writing.
Her biography of Sarah Mathew is published by David Ling Publishing with the support of the Auckland Council. The book will be launched on September 18, on the 175th anniversary of the founding of Auckland in 1840. It will be launched by Auckland Mayor Len Brown at the Auckland City Library.
This event is part of the Auckland Heritage Festival.
