Classics Feature Again At Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa
As has become the tradition at the Trusthouse Racetech Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa, this fast paced rally isn’t just
about the modern machinery powering to claim overall honours. It is also about celebrating the unique motorsport history
of rallying in New Zealand, with the competitors in the Malcolm Stewart Classic Rally again featuring in the entry list
for the 3rd October event.
Previous winner of the Malcolm Stewart trophy, Marcus van Klink returns with his powerful Group B RX7, chasing not only
event honours, but also looking to secure another national championship title.
Also contesting the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship is Tony Gosling. Having achieved a fine
3rd placing in 2013 when Gosling was last in the Wairarapa, he will be looking to move further up the podium, using what
looks to be the same Ford Escort Hayden Paddon drove to victory at Rally Otago earlier this year.
However these front runners will have their work cut out for them, with former national champion Joe McAndrew having
entered his Honda Integra Type R. A car that found fame in winning the London to Sydney Marathon Rally back in 2004. It
will be McAndrew’s first outing for a while, but he will undoubtedly push the others hard.
Add in a the usual range of Ford Escorts, the Mazda RX3 of Roger Goss, a Datsun Sunny B-310 driven by form champion
co-driver Jim Robb, and a mighty Toyota Starlet in the hands of Adam Fisher and you have something for everyone. Both
the excitement of hard charging drivers sending their two wheel drive machines sideways at every opportunity, and an
eclectic mix of cars to get the nostalgia flowing.
With the overall entry list for the Daybreaker Rally Wairarapa approaching 70, it will certainly be an event to watch.
Being the last round of the national championship, as well as the second round of the Geartech Central Region rally
Series, drivers throughout the field have everything to play for and the competition will be tough. That means pushing
hard, spectacular driving, and undoubtedly more than a few dramas along the way.
