Te Māori Manaaki Taonga Trust
Trust Deed Launch
Piri Sciascia, ONZM, proudly invites you to the Te Māori Manaaki Taonga Trust Deed Launch, an event celebrating the implementation of a trust fund developed to encourage and provide support for the education and training of Māori in the skills required for the care and display of taonga Māori.
Inspired by the Te Māori Exhibition, which toured the United States of America from 1984-1987 and helped change public attitudes towards taonga Māori both here in Aotearoa and throughout the world, Te Māori Manaaki Taonga has been developed with input from both the Minister for Culture and Heritage and the Minister Maori Development. Te Māori Manaaki Taonga seeks to honour the legacy of Te Māori, and to preserve that legacy by investing in future generations.

A milestone in the Māori cultural renaissance of the late 1970s onwards, the Te Māori exhibition featured traditional Māori artwork, first touring the United States in 1984, with follow-up shows in New York, St Louis, Chicago and San Francisco. It was a great success and returned to tour New Zealand, again to applause, and a swelling of Māori pride. In particular Te Māori inspired a new generation of artists, curators and educators, something Te Māori Manaaki Taonga seeks to continue and providing support is its main objective.
Te Māori Manaaki Taonga Trust (TMMTT) was therefore established to encourage and provide education and training of Māori as curators, conservators and other officers whose jobs involve the care and/or display of taonga Māori. The Trust fund is derived from the profits of the Te Māori Exhibition, which toured the United States of America from 1984-1987 and the Te Hokinga Mai tour of New Zealand. The Trust does not receive any annual funding from Government. You can find out more about this unique cultural history by attending the Te Māori Manaaki Taonga Trust Deed Launch, where featured speakers and guests will be available for interviews.
