Free Public Reading of New Play
Free Public Reading of New Play
This Sunday, seven young Aucklanders will present a free public reading of a new play.
Don Faust is about a thinker who is developing a theory of love. It re-imagines two European legends – the German story of Doctor Faustus, who sold his soul to the Devil for knowledge, and the Spanish story of Don Juan, a womaniser. The play was inspired by Albert Camus’s notebooks.

Philip McKibbin has drafted the play, and the workshops are being directed by Jesse Hilford. Five actors are helping them to develop the script – Katie Burson, Amelia MacDonald, Aimee Olivia, Hamish Sealey, and Daniel Townsend. In the workshops, and in the time in between them, they have been working to transform McKibbin’s draft into a production-ready script.
‘It’s been great working with a talented bunch of actors,’ Hilford says. ‘It’s very helpful to the process to get together a great group of minds to help Philip make this the best script possible.’
As an actor, Aimee Olivia also sees value in the process. ‘It’s a very wonderful and unique experience to help a writer with his script, to build on what he has already written, to inspire his vision, to fail with our own ideas, to learn, to grow, but mostly to become a better actor,’ she says. ‘That is what this workshop has given me: a chance to keep learning about the magnificent world of theatre and to share the journey with a bunch of talented actors, the director, and mostly the writer.’
The last of the three full-day workshops takes place this Saturday. On Sunday, the actors will give a free public reading of the latest draft of the play. ‘This is a chance for us to share this process with an audience,’ McKibbin explains. ‘We’re all looking forward to presenting the script with all of the changes we’ve made to it, and I know that the actors are excited about performing it.’
The reading will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, 13 September, at ATC Studios, 487 Dominion Road, Mount Eden (entry off Brixton road). Parking is available nearby.
