Waiata Māori Music Awards - Thursday 10 and Friday 11 September 2015
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is pleased to be a sponsor of the Waiata Māori Music Awards which seeks to develop, encourage and honour the achievements of outstanding traditional and contemporary musical compositions and performances. The National Waiata Māori Music Awards was launched in 2007 at a gala event held in Palmerston North. The first awards ceremony was held in 2008 at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House in Hastings. The Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated Board would like to acknowledge the vision and long-time work of the Waiata Māori Music Awards founder, the late Tama Huata. Tama Huata is renowned for his contribution to Māori Performing Arts as a Māori performing arts leader in Aotearoa. This year marks the 8th year of this annual event which continues to promote the diversity of all Māori music, showcase and celebrate its excellence and recognise the unique vision of Maori composers and musicians. We acknowledge the work of Tama’s daughter Ellison Huata who will continue to lead and manage the Waiata Māori Music Awards to ensure the vision continues.
