Chase Brother Dominate Schools’ Champs
SEPTEMBER 8, 2015:
It was another totally dominant performance from Taupo brothers Cohen and Wyatt Chase at the Pukekohe Motorcycle Club's
Secondary Schools Motocross Championships at Mercer, north of Huntly, on Sunday.
The two Yamaha riders between them won six races from six starts in their respective classes, 17-year-old Cohen winning
all three of his races in the 15-18 years' 250cc class and just-turned 16-year-old Wyatt compiling a hat-trick of wins
of his own in the 15-18 years' 125cc class.
As the only two riders there to represent their Tauhara College, less than the number required to officially register as
a team, the two bothers therefore did not qualify for school team points, but that didn't stop them going out and
destroying the competition as they registered personal glory anyway.
The Taupo brothers made it look effortless as they tackled the extremely damp, power-sapping sand track, Cohen Chase
leading Tauranga's Josh Tredinnick and Helensville's Michael Thompson to the top step of the podium in his class and
Wyatt Chase stepping onto his podium ahead of Ngatea's Ben Broad and Dairy Flats' Claude Griffith.
"It was a good day. It started out a bit damp on the track because of all the heavy rain overnight and in the morning
too, but it drained really well and the club did a great job to prepare the track for racing," said Cohen Chase.
"I won my races fairly comfortably. I didn't even know who the riders were behind me and I wasn't being pushed but it
gave me a chance to work on my technique."
Two of the Chase brothers' principal sponsors, Yamaha-Motor New Zealand and Fox racing apparel, were also sponsors of
Sunday's event and the brothers were pleased they were there to cheer them on.
Overall winning school at the event was Rosehill College, with Kaipara College and Hamilton Boys' High School filling
the podium.
The next major event for both the Chase siblings is to tackle the second and final round of the North Island Motocross
Championships in Hawke's Bay on September 19-20.
In that competition, Cohen Chase is running third overall in the senior MX2 (250cc) class, behind Rotorua's Scott Canham
and Foxton's James Anderson, while Wyatt Chase is leading the junior 15-16 years' 125cc class, ahead of Feilding's Tony
Cvitanovich and Thames Valley rider Broad.
