Rare Nude Amongst Renowned Works to Go Under the Hammer
After thirty years tucked away in a private collection, a rare nude by renowned New Zealand artist Peter McIntyre will see the light of day for one week, in the lead-up to the Waikato Art Auction on Monday 14 September.
The signed oil painting, Nude on the beach, and 100 other artworks by some of the country’s best-known artists will be available for public viewing at Hamilton’s Aesthete Gallery until the day of auction, where they will go under the hammer at the RSA on Rostrevor Street.
McIntyre’s painting depicts a nude female bather on a beach, and is thought to have been done soon after the artist’s return home from the war. “This is the first nude by Peter McIntyre I have seen in my forty years of dealing in New Zealand art,” says Fine Art Society director, Grant Bezett.
The auction, will feature over 150 years of artistic endeavour in the Waikato. The earliest piece dates back to Reverend John Kinder in 1863, while the most recent is one by Michael Smither in 2012.
Works to Note:
• Five works by Ida Carey, including a rare early Maori subject from 1934, as well as two later Maori portraits
• A detailed panorama of early Wellington City, dated 1889, by Christopher Aubrey
• An early view of Auckland Harbour, and one of Tauranga Harbour in 1885, by Robert Harvey
• A watercolour of a scene near Taumaranui, circa 1910 by celebrated Waikato artist Horace Moore Jones.
• A Marquette bronze by Paul Dibble for a proposed Moore Jones statue is also up for sale.
• Headlining the contemporary section are two major works by Robert Ellis and Philip Trusttum. Each of these works was completed over 40 years ago, in what was arguably each artist’s best-known periods and series of work. Both have come from a private Waikato collection, where they have been for most of the time since being painted.
