RNZB announces new Harry Haythorne Choreographic Award
The Royal New Zealand Ballet is proud to announce the creation of a brand new choreographic competition in memory of the
company’s former Artistic Director Harry Haythorne (1926 – 2014).
The inaugural competition held this next weekend (12-13 Sept) will see short original dance works by RNZB company
members performed by their fellow dancers. An award of $1,000 will be given to the choreographer of the most outstanding
work as determined by a panel of five judges. There will also be a chance for audience members to vote for an additional
‘audience prize’ of $500 based on votes cast on both evenings. The winners will be announced after the performance on
the 13th September.
“Developing young choreographers and opportunities for them to make work is something I am very passionate about. With
the support of the Foundation we have been able to create this Award to continue Harry’s legacy as Artistic Director.” says RNZB Artistic Director Francesco Ventriglia
“Harry made a wonderful contribution to the RNZB and to the performing arts in New Zealand. Under his leadership the
company reached many milestones including its first full-length production of Swan Lake and our first tour of China. He
was a real man of the theatre, an incredible performer and creative force. His dancers were completely committed to him
and so it is very fitting we have named this award after him.” Says RNZB Managing Director Amanda Skoog.
RNZB dancers that have created works for the night are Damir Emric, Shaun James Kelly, Loughlan Prior, Nathanael Skelton
and Shane Urton.
The Award has been created with the support of the Ballet Foundation of New Zealand.
Harry Haythorne MBE was the Artistic Director of the Royal New Zealand Ballet from 1981 to 1992.
Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September at the Poul Gnatt Studio, on the RNZB premises at the St James Theatre. Tickets
are limited and can be booked online at a general admission price of $10.
