Volunteers help the call for volunteers

Volunteers help the call for volunteers!

Victim Support is delighted to have been accepted for eight different national projects as part of BNZ’s Closed for Good, when the bank shuts its branches for a day and up to 5500 staff help community organisations around New Zealand.

The first activity kicked off in the capital at 7 am on 2 September at the Wellington railway station. Other locations include Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch.

On the single largest day of corporate volunteering, many BNZ staff will spend time fund raising and handing out information about becoming a Victim Support frontline volunteer.

Victim Support provides free emotional and practical support to victims of crime and trauma. It advocates for victims’ rights, helps them to navigate the justice system and puts them in contact with other support services. Its help is available wherever and whenever, town or country, day or night. The support provided is immediate and, where necessary, ongoing. Its primary concern is that victims feel safe and are able to rebuild their lives.

Victims are supported by highly trained volunteer Support Workers, who are managed and supervised by paid staff coordinators. Victim Support is always looking for willing volunteers to ensure there are enough frontline people to help victims.

Volunteers deliver support in victims’ homes, at police stations, at the scene, in court and in the community. Staff provide our volunteers with training and oversight and make sure they are safe and looked after.

Victim Support is a free 24 / 7 community response to people dealing with, in some cases, the worst time of their lives. People who receive adequate support and information are more likely to remain connected in a positive way with their whānau, family and local community and are better placed to rebuild their lives.

To remain free of charge the service relies on financial support from the public, please go to www.victimsupport.org.nz to make a donation.
