Huge Summer of International Cricket for Wellington
Wellington has been awarded some of the biggest games of the summer of cricket, following the announcement of the international schedule by NZC today.
In a feast of cricket action for local sports fans and visitors, Westpac Stadium will host a NZ vs Pakistan T20 international on Friday 22 January 2016, closely followed by the return of one-day international cricket to the iconic Basin Reserve, when the two teams meet the following Monday, Wellington Anniversary Day, 25 January.
There’s little rest as the keenly-anticipated Chappell-Hadlee series then begins, with Westpac Stadium hosting the NZ v Australia ODI on Saturday 6 February, before the test match begins at the Basin Reserve on Friday 12 February.
Wellington Deputy Mayor Justin Lester welcomed the return of international cricket to the city, which has witnessed some historic matches and performances over recent years. “This programme of matches is the result of a collective effort between the Council, Westpac Stadium and Cricket Wellington to secure as many high quality matches as possible, and I’m delighted with the outcome. Local fans and visitors will enjoy some of the world’s finest players, and I’m sure the cricket will exceed everyone’s expectations.”
Westpac Stadium CEO Shane Harmon was similarly excited by the matches. “After the huge success of Cricket World Cup, we’re looking forward to welcoming bumper crowds back to Westpac Stadium to support the Blackcaps this summer against Pakistan in T20 and Australia in a rematch of the Cricket World Cup final. We’re expecting record attendances for our blockbuster summer featuring Elton John, AC/DC, the Sevens, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, The Southern Bowl, the Wellington Phoenix and of course the Blackcaps”
Peter Clinton, Chief Executive of Cricket Wellington, said “we’ve worked hard with Westpac Stadium and the Council to secure a fantastic schedule of international cricket for Wellington fans and visitors into the city. We know how much Wellingtonians love the BLACKCAPS, and I’m expecting huge support at all their games this summer. The ODI against Pakistan at the Basin Reserve will be a special event, one that many sports fans will look forward to and enjoy.”
