World-class NZ Army Band confirmed for Tattoo in WLGTN

World-class NZ Army Band confirmed for 2016 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Wellington

As the 66th Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo gets underway in Scotland, the New Zealand Festival has confirmed that the popular New Zealand Army Band will play a significant role in the Tattoo when it comes to Wellington’s Westpac Stadium for four nights in February 2016.

Widely considered one of the best marching bands in the world, the New Zealand Army Band has had a long association with The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, with the band performing at the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2013 Tattoos, and when the Tattoo was first staged in New Zealand in 2000.
New Zealand Festival Executive Chair, Kerry Prendergast, says she’s thrilled the NZ Army Band has been invited to perform in the Tattoo in Wellington in February.
“The NZ Army band has been New Zealand’s official ceremonial band since it was formed in 1964, however their repertoire extends well beyond traditional drills, and includes everything from swing and jazz to pop and rock.  In 2013 the band made front page news in Edinburgh after delighting sell-out crowds with both a moving haka and a quirky take on South Korean superstar Psy's, Gangnam Style at the Tattoo.  Tattoo tickets are selling fast so grab your chance to see our Army band perform here on home soil”.
NZ Army Drum Major Staff Sergeant Tristan Mitchell, who has just returned from the Basel Tattoo in Switzerland, says the band is honoured to be invited to be a part of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo again and looks forward to delighting audiences here in New Zealand.

“Having personally been involved in over 100 Tattoo performances in Edinburgh over the years with the NZ Army Band – I always look forward to performing in front of home crowds and to perform for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at home will be a career highlight.

“Thirty-seven talented and dedicated NZ Army musicians are required to perform just one of the band’s marching routines in the Tattoo, so planning is already underway. Closer to the time rehearsals will ensure the band is ready to perform to the height of its entertaining and highly choreographed style of marching required for the event,” Staff Sergeant Tristan Mitchell said.

Other New Zealand representation at the February Tattoo performances will include the Lochiel Marching Drill Team and other acts yet to be announced.
