Tutus For Paquita
The New Zealand School of Dance (NZSD) is looking for partners to support the creation of ballet tutus to be worn by students performing the Grand Pas from ‘Paquita’ for the School’sGraduation Season in November.
NZSD needs to raise $9,000 to help with the cost of constructing 18 tutus, each of which takes more than 40 hours to make. A donation of $500 would contribute one tutu, however the School says any amount would be very much appreciated. All will have a life beyond Graduation Season, forming part of the NZSD costume collection to be used for many years to come.
“Tutus add to the magic that happens on stage. They allow you to step into a character”, said Alice Beedie who will be dancing in the Grand Pas. “I am really looking forward to performing alongside my fellow students in these beautiful tutus that have been tailor-made for us”.
Award winning costumier Donna Jefferis has designed the tutus and will oversee the construction, which includes assembling the silk, net, lace, crystals, and corset. Those with an interest can find out more about the process from Donna (and donate to the appeal) at an event on 22 August titled ‘Artistry of the Tutu’.
The Grand Pas, from the 19th century ballet ‘Paquita’, choreographed by Marius Petipa is a major cornerstone of traditional repertoire for ballet companies around the world. New Zealand School of Dance students are very fortunate to have New York based master teacher and celebrated ballerina Anna-Marie Holmes staging the work for them to perform this year.
Donors helping to bring this exciting work to the stage will be instrumental in giving these young dancers the opportunity to show their technical virtuosity to audiences and the dance industry.
