Rehearsals for Evita; the next hit musical set to show in five cities across New Zealand throughout 2015, are underway.
The show is a Musical Theatre New Zealand Consortium show, which will be unveiled in Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch, Rotorua and New Plymouth this year.
The Hamilton Operatic Society is the first out of five community theatre groups across New Zealand to unveil this internationally-renown show.
Rehearsals for the Hamilton Operatic Society’s rendition of Evita (2006 London cast edition) have begun, ready for the show to premiere at Clarence Street Theatre on Saturday 19 September.
The show stars approximately 40 cast and dancers from Hamilton and small surrounding towns. The lead role, Eva Peron, is played by Rebecca Wright from Auckland.
Hamilton Operatic Society chairperson Rachel Balme says the Society’s rendition of Evita is momentous on many levels.
“Evita marks the 175th production ever to be staged by the Society at Hamilton’s Clarence Street Theatre.
“It will also be the
first show performed at the Theatre since the Hamilton City
Council gifted the theatre to Clarence Street Theatre
Trust.”
In Hamilton, Evita will be directed by David
Sidwell, musically Directed by Victoria Trenwith and
choreographed by Sonja Mcgirr-Garrett and Sean
Archer.
Rebecca Wright, as Eva Person will be supported by well-known Hamilton actors Nick Wilkinson as Che Guevara, Benjamin John Moody as Juan Peron, Hannah Keeley Doherty as Peron’s Mistress and Bruce Rawson as Agustin Magaldi.
Balme describes the Evita as the “phenomenal
musical” written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Tim
Rice.
“Set in Buenos Aires between 1934 and 1952, Evita
charts the rags-to-riches rise of Argentine political leader
Eva Peron, the second wife of President Juan Peron.
“Eva’s journey is one of being a fatherless child, to then an ambitious actress, and later one of the most powerful women in Latin America.
Events from Eva Peron's life are presented in song with some of Lloyd Webber's most famous hits including, Don't Cry For Me Argentina, Another Suitcase In Another Hall and Buenos Aires.
“Our stunning cast, full orchestra and unique Musical Theatre New Zealand Consortium set are geared to make this a truly memorable show. We are confident that families, big and small, won’t be disappointed.”
