Sunken Seas Announce New Album 'Glass'
The sound of Sunken Seas is forged somewhere between the shores of Britain's iconic shoegaze movement and the hallowed turf of New Zealand label Flying Nun. Sunken Seas are pleased to announce the release of their forthcoming album 'Glass'.
Two LPs into their career, the band have established themselves as a fixture in the international shoegaze scene, offering a glacial, intoxicating slant on the long-lived virtues of post-punk. The band doesn't do things by halves - Sunken Seas' 2012 debut Null Hour was a searing full-length released to critical acclaim, even a nomination for the 2013 Taite Prize - New Zealand's most prestigious music prize. Graham Reid (New Zealand Herald) described Null Hour as “...an invitation into cathartic noise, chest-thumping volume and an impressive ride into darkness", awarding the record four-and-a-half stars out of five.
Sunken Seas quickly laid down their sophomore release, 2013's EP Cataclysm, recorded, mixed and mastered by the highly regarded Nick Roughan (Skeptics). The EP explored darker territory than its forebear, featuring more vocal presence and cutting lyricism from vocalist Ryan Harte, a dense cacophonous wall of guitars and industrial-style looping drum riffs. The EP was well received and opened Sunken Seas up internationally, UK critic Everett True responding thus: 'They got something. A sense of distance, dissonance, dislocation, despair… I don’t know. But they got something.' The EP was released with a companion short film of the same name, a hypnotic clip thick with existentialist musings.
With an abrasive live show awash with carnal despair and dissonant harmony, Sunken Seas are unwilling to shy away from the stage like many of their shoe-gazing counterparts. Multiple tours of New Zealand, Australia and Japan have sprung from the band's diligent efforts and bubbling interest, supporting the likes of The Black Angels, Wooden Shjips, Bailterspace and John Cooper Clarke.
With 'Glass' ready for digital release in late September 2015, fans can expect to find out more about the album in the weeks ahead. With further national and international touring on the horizon, Sunken Seas are deeply submerged in their craft, and need not be concerned with riding waves.
