Scout scarf empowers youth!
Look out for a colourful array of Scout scarves and woggles being worn on Friday 7 August! These may appear in your school, workplace, at shopping malls or could also be displayed on local landmarks, as SCOUTS New Zealand celebrates the 2nd annual National SCOUT Scarf Day.
Chief Executive, Niamh Lawless says “The Scout scarf empowers youth and unites our members. It is key to our new strategy Better Prepared - when unrolled it is the perfect size for use as a triangular bandage for first aid”.
All past and present members are being encouraged to wear their scarf for the day to work or school to promote Scouting and youth empowerment.
A Facebook and Instagram competition is being run by SCOUTS National Youth Council for the coolest place to wear the scarf, and for the most ‘likes’ with a celebrity wearing the scarf.
Last year saw one member wearing their scarf while doing a bungy jump and another while driving a Fire engine. A stuffed Moa at Zealandia was also spotted wearing a scarf on the day!
With over 400 Groups and more than 21,000 current members, the Scout scarf is likely to be seen in many towns and cities this Friday. SCOUTS New Zealand continues to see steady growth, with new groups being started up - especially in low socio-economic areas.
"It’s an exciting time to be part of Scouting" said Mark Long, Head of Development and Capability. "Our recently launched Better Prepared plan includes our vision that in 2025, more than 25,000 youth will enjoy scouting adventures. They will come from every background, with a place for all, shape their own experiences and make a positive difference for New Zealand”.
