New Flag for Martian Colony
New Flag for Martian Colony
A bold new official flag has been unveiled by Martian colony Pioneer City today, to an enthusiastic response from migrants, supporters, and other stakeholders.
“This flag is fantastic. It came as a refreshing surprise, something I never would have come up with myself. Those designers and visual artists are exceptionally talented people, and they've done us proud: coming up with a flag that will stand strong amongst the flags of earth,” said Dr. Samuel Simons, Chair of the Migrant Consultation Committee.
Finding someone to design the flag wasn't easy, “This project needed to be led by an artist with significant post-colonial experience, deep knowledge of Mars and the city itself, and the ability to create visual works that have the power to shape how we view ourselves.”
After considering many potential artists and designers, the Pioneer City Board of Directors tasked their Asia-Pacific Representative Bronwyn Holloway-Smith with leading the flag creation project.
She says “The flag features four concave indentations, representing the first four planets leading away from the sun: the fourth indentation is highlighted with a circular motif that represents both the planet Mars, and Pioneer City nestled in it's natural site, a pedestal crater.”
The artist worked in response to a mutally agreed brief, and developed the design through an extensive research and development phase whereby she sought and considered feedback from a range of representative groups including artists, designers, public communicators, and diplomats.
“A key feature of this design is the inability for it to be hung upside down. The Pioneer City flag works whether it is hung with a black base (representing the land with a sunset sky glowing over the city) or an orange base (the night sky with the rusty landscape of Mars opening out beneath). After all, “up” and “down” are a matter of perspective – particularly when you are in zero gravity.”
The Pioneer City Board of Directors intentionally chose not to pursue a committee-led flag design process, as some foreign nations have. “The development of a new flag is an artistic process. We felt it was highly appropriate to turn over decisions on the flag design to an expert in the visual field. As the saying goes: 'creativity-by-committee turns out badly: safe beats out great'.”
“We support full public consultation processes, but feel that they would be better suited to making decisions on treaties, positions on warfare, housing, energy sourcing, providing for the children of the city, and so forth.”
“We are thrilled with the flag design: it is a powerful symbol of who we are, and how we seek to define ourselves as a unique, smart new city.”
