Auckland confirmed for five All Blacks Tests
Auckland will host three matches during the 2017 British & Irish Lions Series, including two Tests, adding to the bumper year Auckland will have as the host of the 2017 World Masters Games.
The All Blacks will meet the British & Irish Lions at Eden Park on 24 June and 8 July 2017. The Lions will also play the Blues at Eden Park on 7 June 2017.
In addition to the Lions matches, Auckland has also been confirmed as the host city of three additional All Blacks Tests. In 2016 the All Blacks will play Wales and Australia, and in 2017 take on South Africa.
“Today’s confirmation from New Zealand Rugby is a huge win for Auckland and visitors to our city,” says Mayor Len Brown.
“RWC 2011 was a major turning point for Auckland as a world-class events city and we have continued to build on that success in planning for future years. Securing the right to host these fixtures for both 2016 and 2017 is also recognition of our city organisations working together as a cohesive regional group to secure this opportunity for Auckland.”
Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) worked in partnership with Auckland Rugby Union, North Harbour Rugby, Counties Manukau Rugby Union, the Blues, Regional Facilities Auckland, Auckland Transport and Eden Park.
ATEED Chief Executive, Brett O’Riley, says: “The 2005 Lions tour brought millions into the Auckland economy and nearly 20,000 international visitors. We expect these events to bring visitors to Auckland from around the world, therefore new money into the economy, we’ll be focusing on making this an unmissable event for Aucklanders and visitors alike.”
“Auckland is cementing its global reputation as a major events city. It’s a great place to visit, live, invest and work. From an events perspective whether we’re talking about one of the world cup events that have taken place in Auckland this year, the 2017 World Masters Games and NZ Lions 2017 Series, or one of the many other sporting, arts and cultural events, the show definitely never stops in Auckland.”
