Queenstown – there’s snow-where better to be for school holidays
There’s snow-where better to be than Queenstown right now – with New Zealand’s most popular ski resort town buzzing with
snow fever today (Monday July 6).
A fresh dump of light-as-air powder has perfectly timed its arrival, as Queenstown welcomes school holidaymakers from
across the country and across the ditch.
Marking the second week of the Australian school holidays and the first weekend of the Kiwi school break, last night’s
perfectly-timed new snowfall heralded a busy day on the slopes today starting out with a stunning sunrise before the
snow starting falling again at lunchtime.
Coronet Peak and The Remarkables have kicked off the school holidays in style with a bumper weekend across both
mountains and sensational winter conditions to match.
Cold south westerlies delivered 15cms of light dry snow to Coronet Peak overnight, with persistently cold temperatures
ensuring the snow will stay powder-dry and chalky.
“First tracks this morning was just awesome for those powder hounds who were up here at first light, and now conditions
couldn’t be better for all our school holiday visitors who are enjoying lessons and fun in the snow.”
Across the valley at The Remarkables, sub-zero temperatures and 20cms of fluffy white goodness means its light and dry
packed on groomed trails and powder “as good as it gets” off-piste.
NZSki CEO Paul Anderson said school holiday numbers were living up to expectations as Queenstown “pulled out all the
stops” for its peak winter visitor period.
“Schools holidays are in full swing and town is teeming with happy families and budding young skiers and boarders, many
hitting the slopes for the very first time.
“We’re delighted with last night’s top-up of snow and can’t wait to hear the feedback after what’s set to be a cracking
few days on both mountains, with even more snow in the forecast throughout the week.”
Bumper snow conditions are not only benefitting the ski areas but all the resort town’s businesses too. Queenstown
Airport experienced its busiest ever day on Saturday (July 4), with a recording-breaking 11 international flights
touching down and visitors transferring through a brand new multi-million-dollar arrival hall.
