Cardrona on Track to Open Olympic Superpipe within a Week
After a bumper start to the 2015 winter season, Cardrona has accelerated the construction of its freestyle features and currently offers the most extensive terrain park facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. Cardrona’s 22ft Olympic Superpipe, the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, is on track to open within a week. Earthworks were completed over summer to widen the pipe and due to the quality of snow being used, the unique feature is expected to last the entire season (Closing Day October 11) and throughout Cardrona’s post-season Spring Training Camp.
Cardrona has had features in all four of its popular terrain parks from the first week of the season, which opened a week earlier this year on June 13. The Cardrona Parks Crew have consistently increased the freestyle offering from Opening Day, installing new features on a regular basis. Cardrona’s General Manager Bridget Legnavsky states: “We have an incredible, experienced team dedicated to providing epic terrain parks for all levels and due to the frequent snowfalls, they’ve been able to install features much earlier this season to offer exceptional park and pipe facilites.”
For the very
first time in its history, Cardrona now has three triple
jump lines available for beginner to expert levels. Lil’
Bucks Park now has 5 kickers from 5-15 feet in length,
Antlers Alley has 3 kickers from 20-30 feet and Big Bucks
Park has 3 large jumps from 35-55 feet. Not only have the
Cardrona Parks Crew been busy installing features, but
they’ve also built 17 new jib features (rails, boxes,
wallrides etc) for this season. The four terrain parks
currently have around 30 jib features, but with a total
stock count of 80, new features are expected to be installed
quickly and frequently in the upcoming weeks.
Once the 22ft Olympic Superpipe is ready, the Terrain Park builders will direct their attention to constructing the International Halfpipe (15 ft) and Cardrona Big Air (85ft+). Not only are all features available to the general public, but an abundance of international athletes and snowsport’s superstars are expected to utilize Cardrona’s world-class terrain park facilities again this season. The early start will provide ample opportunity for both local and international competitors to train for the pinnacle events Cardrona is to host over the coming months.
Cardrona will host the freestyle events in both the Audi Quattro Winter Games and The Northface Freeski Open of New Zealand which will include 8 World Cup events, two Big Airs and the Winter Games Closing Ceremony.
