TAKI RUA PRESENTS: NGĀ POU WAHINE
It's been 20 years since Ngā Pou Wahine was first brought to the stage by Taki Rua Productions in what was a watershed moment in the career of one of our most prolific Māori writers, Briar Grace-Smith. Taki Rua is remounting the play for limited seasons in Wellington, Auckland, Whangarei and Kaitaia during Matariki 2015.
Ngā Pou Wahine brings to life the journey of a young, working class wahine, as she discovers her true spirit through the fabulous stories of her whānau and the dramatic history of her ancestor, Waiora. Grace-Smith perfectly balances drama with humour as Te Atakura weaves together these stories, past and present, to discover the truth about her family and the strength of her ancestors.

CHAMBER MUSIC NEW ZEALAND PRESENTS INSPIRED BY BACH: MICHAEL HOUSTOUN

Discover the influence of Johann Sebastian Bach in a musical journey with New Zealand's most revered pianist, Michael Houstoun. Featuring piano transcriptions, homages and a new work from composer Ross Harris, this concert explores Bach's music. The piano did not exist during Bach's lifetime so transcribing for the instrument leaves space for interpretation from each composer – hear how they redesign his music to explore their own musical expression. Alongside Bach's Partita No 1 in B flat, the programme features Ross Harris' Fugue for Piano, Lilburn's Chaconne (in recognition of the composer's centenary) and masterpieces by Ravel and Rachmaninov.
“To play across a wide spectrum of repertoire is to encounter JS Bach at every turn. Learning a Prelude and Fugue is really the beginning of a pianist’s musical education.” – Michael Houstoun
