Matakite: the face of vision, the eye that sees, the seer
Mere Whaanga and David Veart in conversation
A Devonport Library Associates event, in association with the Michael King Writers' Centre
Devonport author and archaeologist David Veart speaks with Mere Whaanga, the current writer in residence at the Michael King Writers' Centre. Whaanga is writing a novel, Legacy of the Seer, about three generations of Maori psychics in rural Hawkes Bay. Can they preserve their ancient knowledge of a femail deity despite the onslaught of Christianity? What happened to their culture between 1866 and 1990?
