To Russia with Gloves - Young Northland Boxer Steps Up
Kyle training
Auckland, 29 July 2015 - Bay of Islands boxer Kyle Chen continued his preparation for the 2015 Junior World Championships in Russia in style with an impressive performance at the recent Supercity Boxing tournament in Manukau, Auckland (27 June).
Kyle, representing Spartan Boxing Club and North Harbour Boxing, stepped up from his usual 66kg weight class to take on the 2015 70kg Golden Gloves champion Sonatane Tautalanoa of Rising Stars Boxing, Mangere. Following the instructions of his corner to the letter, Kyle overcame his opponent in less than a minute of action.
Chen measured his opponent with long, straight leads before following up with powerful right hand shots to the head. A strong opening attack proved too much for his adversary, who was under extreme pressure from the first bell. A fast, hard combination forced Sonatane to the ropes where he was hit with several thumping right-hand punches to both head and body. Referee Trish Howie stepped in to administer a standing eight-count before calling a halt to the match as the Rising Stars boxer was in no condition to continue. The action lasted approximately 40 seconds and was the shortest contest at the 13-bout event.
Following confirmation of his selection to the New Zealand Junior team, Kyle is looking forward to a week of training in Auckland during the upcoming school break. This will be followed up by Youth and Junior training camp in Hamilton.
As the Junior tournament is self-funded, Kyle is looking for any kind of support to make his dream happen. To this end he has launched a "Give a Little" page:https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/juniorworldboxingchamps2015
