van Klink looks to continue strong form
Kaiapoi’s Marcus van Klink is looking to continue his strong form at round four of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, Fuchs Rally Gisborne, this weekend.
His best ever start to a season has seen van Klink score 108 of a possible 118 points in the NZRC historic championship driving the Chesters Plumbing Supplies Mazda RX-7 while also sitting fifth equal in the overall NZRC standings despite driving a 30 year old, two wheel drive car.
A good clean run on home soil at the previous round, Rally Canterbury, has seen the Klink Rallysport team with just routine maintenance to be done on the Mazda before it journeys north to the event.
The last time the Gisborne event was a round of the NZRC was 2012, where a broken axle couldn’t stop van Klink and co-driver Dave Neill taking out their first historic championship.
That event had a very different look to the 2015 edition, which will see competitors taking on legendary stages used in Rally New Zealand for years including Rakauroa, Whakarau and the mighty Motu. These stages offer up a challenge that excites van Klink.
“This event gives us the chance to get on some of the most famous rallying roads in the world, particularly the Motu, which I’m really looking forward to,” says van Klink. “So far we’ve had a fantastic season and although this is going to be a really tough rally, I’d love to grab another top result.”
The Fuchs Rally Gisborne runs on June 27, taking in 146 kilometres of demanding special stages north of Gisborne before returning to the host town for the finish at Reads Quay from 5.35 that afternoon.
